Dating: Help me understand something, please?

To a lot of you, this is going to seem like a rather silly question, but please forgive my ignorance. I've only had one relationship before, and that was more like a pseudo-relationship than anything else. Anyway, here goes nothing:

My question is this: how exactly do you know when someone likes you? Everyone I know has somehow figured out that the person they're now dating liked them before they were asked out, but I've never been able to see it. Maybe it's because I'm horrible with reading people or maybe it's because I'm just not that good with girly things or some other reason, but I've never been able to see subtle signs; it's always had to be either pointed out to me or been something obvious to notice it, which is part of the reason that I've never had an ACTUAL boy/girlfriend before (the boy because he told me after I got to know him better and began thinking of him as a brother, and the girl because at the time I wasn't into girls, or really anyone for that matter). The pseudo-relationship started because we were both turning everything people in a thread said perverted, then he actually SAID that he thought I was cute from a picture I'd showed him before we met IRL. Is this just something you learn? Are there signs I should be able to read by now? The whole thing just confuses me to no end.

Sorry if this seems silly; it's just been bugging me, and nobody I know has been able to give me any other answer other than "You'll just know when the signs are there," no matter how many times I've told them I don't know anything about those signs.

`Coralinthium, it's not silly! I have the same problem. I can't see the signs, either. I just can't figure it out. So, I can't really answer your question.

Normally what I do though, is to tell someone that I like them that way. But if you're like me and you're shy, it takes you forever to work up the courage to say that sort of thing.
